Dr. Kapoor's research program is directed towards understanding the complex pathophysiology of osteoarthritis (OA) and identifying new therapeutic strategies to counteract the destruction of the articular cartilage during OA. His expertise is in the field of cartilage biology, molecular/cellular biology, pharmacology, knockout mice generation, animal models of arthritis as well as human OA pathogenesis.
His research interests include:
- Understanding the mechanisms that are essential for maintaining articular cartilage hemostasis as well as mechanisms that trigger cell death and articular cartilage damage associated with OA.
- Understanding the relationship between metabolic syndrome and OA initiation and progression.
- Identifying new OA biomarkers using human OA specimens.
Another aspect of Dr. Kapoor's research is to understand the pathophysiology of systemic sclerosis by identifying mechanisms involved in initiating a fibrotic response and identifying molecular targets involved in differentiation of fibroblasts into myofibroblasts.
